Divorce, Remarriage & Aging
Many of us have heard stories where people are married and remarried over and over again. Maybe you have an uncle or aunt that has been married three or four times. Something that may scare us out of getting married or pursuing a relationship is that we may have a relative or know someone who has been through similar experiences. Divorce is something much more common these days than it was in the past. It has become much easier for couples to get a divorce now because of the no-fault divorce. My goal today is to talk about divorce openly. I want to talk about possible reasons for divorce and what we can do to avoid it.
Many hear the statistic that 50% of marriages end in divorce. While this may be true it is not a complete representation of marriages that end in divorce. Many assume that if we take 100 people and survey how many of them will get divorced that we think that 50 of them will. But this is not true. Only about 24% of people go through a divorce. But that 24% of people tend to get remarried and they get divorced again. People who get married and then who get a divorce are much more likely to get another divorce. So this statistic should actually bring hope and relief instead of panic and fear about marriage and family. It is comforting to realize that not as many of us will experience a divorce.
Many argue that there are several reasons why people should get a divorce. They can be represented by the four A's. The first being adultery. Adultery is often the greatest form of betrayal. Because of how personal and intimate sexual relationships are it can be very damaging to a marriage when a spouse commits adultery. But it is also important to know that adultery is not just committed through sexual intimacy. Often a spouse may commit adultery in a more emotional and mental way rather than physical. This can be just as damaging because this can form a wedge between the couple and they may not be able to connect or feel loved in the same way.
Another A is abuse. Abuse can take many forms: such as spiritual abuse, physical, mental, verbal and emotional abuse. All of them are extremely harmful and can damage or destroy any marriage quickly. This is something that many are not aware of. Being manipulative in any way is also abuse. Being careful of this includes using kind words and being quick to repent.
The third A is addiction. Some examples of this are addiction to pornography, drugs, alcohol and even other things like video games. This is important in a marriage because addiction can literally change someone's brain chemistry and how it works. Pornography especially works this way. It destroys someone's brain and causes them to think differently. This can causes rifts within a marriage because we are meant to cleave unto our spouses and not unto anything else. In order for a marriage to be successful husband and wife need to fully invest in each other and not.
Marriage is very hard but also very rewarding. There is no reason that we should be sacred of marriage and the statistics.I want to make a claim that there is only one very good reason to get a divorce. And that is if God has told you to. Many things can be worked through and overcome. Many couples have actually experienced greater marital satisfaction after working through adultery. If couples can work through difficulties and hardships such as adultery and addiction. If couples work through hardships they will become closer through trials.
